X Capacitor and Y Capacitor
Class X and Y capacitors help minimize EMI/RFI generation and negative effects associated with received EMI/RFI.
In order for these capacitors to perform their EMI/RFI filtering duties, they are connected directly to the AC mains input, the AC "line" and AC "neutral" (see Figure 2 below). Due to this direct connection to AC voltage, capacitors can be exposed to overvoltages and/or voltage transients - lightning strikes, power surges. Therefore, the possibility of capacitor failure is very high.
When a Class X capacitor (also known as a "cross-line capacitor" - a capacitor placed between line and neutral) fails due to an overvoltage event, it is likely to short out. This failure in turn causes overcurrent protection devices such as fuses or circuit breakers to trip. So a capacitor failing in this way does not pose any shock hazard.
